PRESS HAND-OUT

11TH INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN’S FILM FESTIVAL

In the last couple of years Film production in our country has made phenomenal growth in terms of quality and quantity. Both mainstream cinema and art films are drawing ever increasing viewers in the ever growing Multiplexes.  Unfortunately, there is hardly any space now for children’s films in those Multiplexes.

Cine Central, Calcutta, which is devoted in the film-appreciation movement for last 46 years, has always taken keen interest in promoting children films. We believe that a Film festival exclusively for children can help to draw attention on this neglected field.

We are pleased to inform you that the 11th International Children’s Film Festival is going to be held from 17th June to 31st August, 2011 in Kolkata and different locations in the Statein collaboration with UNICEF, Nandan (West Bengal Film Centre) and Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre, Govt.of India, Salt Lake.

This festival will give the children an opportunity to view some interesting films from various countries with their friends, without any entry fees.

The Inaugural Ceremony of the International Children’s Film Festival will be held on 17th June 2011, Friday at 6.00 p.m. at Purbashree Auditorium (EZCC), Salt Lake.  His Excellency Shri M K Narayanan, Governor of West Bengal has kindly consented to inaugurate the festival.

Mrs Lori Calvo, Chief, UNICEF Field Office, Kolkata will be present as Guest of Honour, Ms Koel Mallick, eminent actress and Celebrity Advocate for the Girl Child, UNICEF, West Bengal will be present as Special Guest, Hon'ble Justice Shri Shyamal Kumar Sen, President, Cine Central, Calcutta will preside over the function, Shri Anup Matilal, Director, Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre, Govt. of India, Shri Bidyut Bhattacharjee, Chief Executive Officer, Nandan (West Bengal Film Centre) and Dr. Biswajiban Majumdar, Vice-President, Cine Central, Calcutta will also grace the occasion.

We are delighted to inform you that this year one important highlight will be the screening of five short films made by a group of six underprivileged children and youth of SANLAAP with the active cooperation of UNICEF.

It may be mentioned here that Cine Central, Calcutta organized the 1st International Children’s Film Festival in December 1979 in celebration of the International Year of Child.  The venue was Calcutta Maidan opposite Birla Planetarium. In the same venue the 2nd International Children’s Festival and fair was held in 1981. The Third International Children’s Film Festival & Fair was held again at Calcutta Maidan in February, 1982. But, we could not continue this programme owing to financial crunch.  However, we organized the 4th International Children’s Film Festival in August 1999. Afterwards, there has been persistent request from our members and well wishers to revive the children’s film festival. So we decided to hold this programme every year. We made a new beginning in the year 2005, and ever since have been continuing with successful subsequent editions.

We sincerely hope this year the festival will be enjoyed by the children, and will also help to draw the attention of the reputed production houses and the film industry as a whole for the further development of Children’s Films.

Inaugural Film : Kung Fu Panda-II, ( Dir : Jennifer Yuh / USA / 90mins / 2011).
